TWO OFFICERS: PASTOR AND DEACON

 

                 I. THE OFFICE OF PASTOR

 

                              1. Titles

· Three major titles

- pastor: shepherd, one who feeds, preacher, Eph 4.11

- bishop: overseer, administrator, organizer, 1Ti 3.1

- elder: counselor, example, Titus 1.5

· All refer to one office, one officer, the same man

- 1Pe 5.1-3 The elders which are among you I exhort...feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof.

- Titus 1.5-7 Ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee...for a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God.

- Act 20.17,28  [He] called the elders of the church...over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church.

 

                              2. Qualifications

· Moral and spiritual characteristics: 1Ti 3.1-7, Titus 1.6-9

· Attitude: 2Ti 2.24-26

· Training: Titus 1.9, 2Ti 3.16-17

· Ordination: 1Ti 4.14, 1Ti 5.22, Titus 1.5

 

                              3. Responsibilities

· Preach: 2Ti 4.2, 1Pe 5.2, Act 20.28

· Teach: 1Ti 3:2, 1Ti 4:11, 1Ti 6:2, 2Ti 2:2, 2Ti 2:24

· Rule (Leadership): 1Ti 5.17, Heb 13.7, Heb 13.17

· Work: 1Ti 3:1, 1Ti 4:10, 1Ti 5:17, 2Ti 2:21, 2Ti 4:5, 1Th 5.12-13

· Pray: 1Ti 2:1, 1Ti 2:8, 1Ti 4:5, 2Ti 1:3, Act 6.4, Jam 5.14,

· Train: Eph 4.11-12, 2Ti 2.2

· Evangelize: 2Ti 4.5

 

 

              II. THE OFFICE OF DEACON

 

                              1. Qualifications: Act 6.3, 1Ti 8-12

 

                              2. Responsibilities

· The word "deacon" literally means servant or helper.

· The deacon is to assist the pastor.

· NOTE: Two outstanding leaders of the early church were deacons

- Stephen, Act 6.8-7.60

- Philip, Act 8.5-40
