963 TWO OFFICERS: PASTOR AND DEACON
I. THE OFFICE OF PASTOR
1. Titles · Three major titles - pastor: shepherd, one who feeds, preacher, Eph 4.11 - bishop: overseer, administrator, organizer, 1Ti 3.1 - elder: counselor, example, Titus 1.5 · All refer to one office, one officer, the same man - 1Pe 5.1-3 The elders which are among you I exhort...feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof. - Titus 1.5-7 Ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee...for a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God. - Act 20.17,28 [He] called the elders of the church...over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church.

2. Responsibilities · The word "deacon" literally means servant or helper. · The deacon is to assist the pastor. · NOTE: Two outstanding leaders of the early church were deacons - Stephen, Act 6.8-7.60 - Philip, Act 8.5-40 |
