Who Hurt.

HOW TO TRULY COMFORT SOMEONE

§         Empathize genuinely with the one who hurts.

§         Don’t talk too much.  Listen!

§         Don’t become argumentative.

§         Don’t belittle the one who hurts.

§         Don’t assume that you know all the answers.

§         Don’t condemn with words that hurt.

§         Share encouraging words from God’s promises.

§         Tenderly pray with the one who hurts.

James 5:10-11

“Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen

the end of the Lord; that

the Lord is very pitiful,

and of tender mercy.”

JOB AND JESUS

(Life Application Study Bible, Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.; Wheaton, IL; 1989; p. 945)

The book of Job is intimately tied to the NT

because Job’s questions and problems are answered perfectly in Jesus Christ.

Subject:  Someone must help us approach God.

Reference in Job:  Job 9:32-33  For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

How Jesus is the Answer:  1 Tim. 2:5  For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Subject:  Is there life after death?

Reference in Job:  Job 14:14  If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

How Jesus is the Answer:  John 11:25  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

Subject:  There is One in heaven working on our behalf.

Reference in Job:  Job 16:19  Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.

How Jesus is the Answer:  Hebrews 9:24  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

Subject:  There is One Who can save us from judgment.

Reference in Job:  Job 19:25  For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

How Jesus is the Answer:  Hebrews 7:24-25  But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Subject:  Where do we find God?

Reference in Job:  Job 23:3-5  Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.

How Jesus is the Answer:  John 14:19  Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

Subject:  What is important in life?

Reference in Job:  Job 40:4-5  Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth. Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

How Jesus is the Answer:

-Matthew 16:26  For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

-John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

REVIEW  TEST!

JOB – “DON’T QUIT!”

THEME of Unit 1:  “The Test of the Best”…

(Previous memory verses)

1.  The book of Job is written with feeling.

-Psalm 42:5, Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.  8/29/04.

2.  A true believer seeks to live right because he reveres God.

-Proverbs 9:10, The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.  9/5/04.

3.  Satan attacks the believer, But God faithfully defends him.

-Revelation 12:10, And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.  9/12/04 & 9/19/04.

4.  Trials may bring significant loss, but they should never cause one to lose his spiritual integrity.

-James 5:10, Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.”  10/17/04.

THEME of Unit 2:  “With Friends Like These”…

5.  It is good to share one’s grief with trusted friends.

-Psalm 88:1-2, O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:  Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry.  10/24/04

6.  Even trusted friends can be wrong in their counsel.

-Isaiah 53:7, He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.  11/14/04

7.  A believer under trials may be misunderstood by his friends.

-Psalm 49:20, Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.  11/21/04

8.  Well-meaning friends may incorrectly rebuke a faithful believer.

-Matthew 5:11-12, Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.  11/28/04

9.  Despite circumstances, the believer can always be assured that God is great and just.

-Isaiah 45:21, Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.  12/5/04

THEME of Unit 3:  “God is Great and God is Good”…

10.  The believer should always trust God, because God is always in control.

-Isaiah 50:10, Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.  12/12/04

11.  A believer must confess his self-righteousness as sin and replace it with true humility.

-James 4:10, Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.  12/19/04

12.  God rewards those who trust him.

-James 5:11, Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.  12/26/04

13.   Suffering does not imply unrighteousness.  God may permit it to demonstrate the (reality of God’s grace at work in the believer’s life?) believer’s character.  Such trials will lead to Satan’s rebuke, our good, and God’s glory.

-Romans 8:28, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

-Genesis 50:20, But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.  1/9/05
